Treatment Proposal

Before beginning a treatment, I need to examine the object in person to develop a treatment proposal. This may take place in the studio or at the client’s premises. During the examination, I will survey the condition, photograph the textile, decide the best way to address the issues, and provide a cost and time estimate.

Condition Survey

During the condition survey, I examine the object for issues such as structural weaknesses, distortions, soiling, tears, etc. My report will include a description of the issue, its severity, location, and likely cause.

Photography

I will then photograph the object to document its condition before treatment. This will include overall shots of all sides and detailed images of areas of concern. All images will be shared with the client. Depending on the object, I may also draw diagrams to illustrate the location of condition issues or explain a construction detail.

Treatment Proposal

After considering the condition of the object and the needs of the client, I will develop a plan for treatment. Treatments vary by object but may include surface cleaning, wet cleaning, stitched supports, and other methods. I will explain the risks of any treatment proposed and steps that will be taken to mitigate them. Treatment proposals may include options that can be discussed with the client to develop a plan that suits their needs and budget.

Treatment Cost Estimate

The price of conservation treatments vary depending on the condition and size of the object and the number of hours and materials required for the treatment. Therefore, pricing varies from textile to textile. I cannot give a price estimate from an email or phone consultation. Any cost estimate requires a treatment proposal so that I can understand the condition of your object and provide an accurate price.
